The approaches and paths have been redesigned, resurfaced and are vastly improved. The South pathway is now closed for related work. My understanding is that each paths can be open to pedestrians and cyclists after work is accomplished.
The doorway on the Manhattan aspect is way wider and does not have any tight hairpin turns that created choke factors for cyclists and pedestrians on the south walkway. The New Jersey strategy is extra accesible and managed as you enter and exit north of the bridge on the intersection with visitors lights.
