Classic Norton Bikes: 1910 TT Programme

-SG- With out wishing to decrease the significance of Rem Fowler’s win within the twin cylinder class on the inaugural 1907 TT, the very fact stays that the Norton efficiency within the TT for the subsequent seven years was, to place it bluntly, poor!  Ten retirements and three not superb finishes. One of many retirements was J L Norton himself in 1910.  He retired after two laps, the second being unduly lengthy following a cam follower breakage. It was reported within the Motor Cycle that he managed to get the bike going once more – albeit very slowly – by vastly decreasing the inlet valve spring strain,  to the extent that the engine ran on the Automated Inlet Valve precept. Ingenious or what! (He additionally retired in 1909 and 1911!)

Alan not too long ago despatched scans of the 1910 TT programme which he got here throughout within the IOM not too long ago and Martin has achieved some helpful tweaking on the photographs to make them extra legible. Many due to each!  By the way, the second Norton rider listed – P Brewster – didn’t begin following a practise crash. Once more quoting from the Motor Cycle – ‘he tried to take the nook at an not possible pace…..’
