Bike Experience: Howard’s Twisted Tongue

Howard’s Twisted Tongue is also called Howard’s Lick, Misplaced River State Park Street, and West Virginia Route 12 it is a technically tough highway to experience your motorbike. It’s an unmarked 1 to 2 lane highway with a number of 180 switchbacks and hairpins.

I had by no means heard of Howard’s Twisted Tongue till a couple of days earlier than we made the experience.  My driving buddy, Mark, found this experience on a map, it was shut by and appeared prefer it may be enjoyable, so it was time to mount up and experience.

The climate on the day we took off for Howard’s Twisted Tongue was excellent for driving bikes.  It was partly sunny and early morning cool.

It didn’t take lengthy to get to the highway, and we knew from the beginning that it was going to be a little bit of a problem because it grew to become a steep incline instantly.  I don’t understand how excessive we climbed however my greatest guess could be between 800 and 1000 ft.

Did I point out a number of switchbacks and hairpins?  There are a bunch of tight turns, many are a bit off camber, and most are ascending or descending steeply.  You want to watch your self as many of those turns have gouges within the highway from heavy automobiles or automobiles towing trailers. The highway itself is, as I famous, unmarked, in largely good situation however with some tough and potholed areas as nicely.

The climb up is nicely definitely worth the experience, as you’ll experience alongside the ridge high for a number of miles.  The views from the highest of the ridge are nice and there are a stunning variety of very costly properties alongside the highway.

After a couple of miles you’ll begin the descent which is able to take you into Misplaced River State Park.  I’ve been to Misplaced River State Park up to now and I prefer to make the park a day experience vacation spot.

Howard’s twisted tongue ends, for us, on the intersection of 12 and 259 on the city of Mathias.  If you’ll experience this highway, be prepared for some technical driving.  You’ll be in low gear for lots of time. Be sure to get your head turned and keep in mind to “look the place you need to go”.
