Tour De France ’23 Stage 20 Penultimate! Dialogue! Spoiler!

Stage 20: Penultimate Stage! A mountain stage! All of the marbles! Until they’re already all grabbed up?

There’s a first climb, then a tortuous sawtooth of a second climb, then two steep climbs, resulting in a flat run-in.

This profile units the stage for lots of drama. Leaders might be attacked repeatedly, which is just about the one method to overtake a frontrunner.

The climbing begins proper from the beginning – 13 miles up Ballon d’Alsace, with the ultimate 8 miles fairly steep, at 5.2%. The sprinter factors are mercifully on the finish of the descent from Ballon d’Alsace, permitting the sprinters and perhaps a bunch of others nursing wounds to take pleasure in a large Lanterne Rouge for the remainder of the experience.

These with general high ten ambitions will press on for 25 miles of sawtooth as much as Col de la Schlucht. After the descent, there’s a hearty 6 mile experience up Petit Balon, famous at 8.1%. That is adopted by the ultimate climb of the day, and of the tour, 5.5 miles up Col du Platzerwasel, with most at 8.4%, then a flat run-in of about three miles to the end.

Not a lot terrain to regoup after that last climb!

The end is fairly tame apart from one very brief bend a brief distance from the end line.
