’54 Schwinn Klunker – BikeBound

A Moto-Impressed, Race-Profitable “Klunker” from our Editor in Chief:

In 2021, when our native grime bike trails closed, I discovered myself climbing the partitions, crazed for a method again into the woods on two wheels.

On a street journey out West that summer time, I bought speaking to one of many mechanics at Gila Hike and Bike in Silver Metropolis, New Mexico, who was driving a Seventies Suzuki two-stroke enduro very similar to the ’78 Yamaha DT175 strapped to the hitch provider of our camper van.

Upon our return to Georgia, I found the nice mountain bike trails we now have on a few our barrier islands and got down to construct a moto-inspired “klunker” — a bicycle that might recall the early days of MTB tradition, when pioneering riders like Gary Fisher, Tom Ritchey, Joe Breeze, Wendy Cragg, and Charlie Kelly have been bombing down Mount Tam on custom-made newsboy bikes — aka “klunkers” or “bombers” — the ancestors of immediately’s mountain bikes. Many of those bikes used varied motorbike elements for his or her toughness, because the street componentry of the period couldn’t reduce the mustard.

As we speak, I’m happy to have a narrative in BikeBound’s favourite biking publication, The Radavist, which particulars constructing, driving, and racing my 69-year-old Schwinn…even taking dwelling an surprising win towards some trendy competitors, jorts and all!
